FAQ
Xtreme Pepper Spray FAQ
What is oleoresin capsicum (OC)?
Oleoresin capsicum (OC) is the oil taken from the stem of a pepper. Although OC is the active ingredient used in most pepper sprays, the percentage of OC contained in the formulation does NOT indicate the pepper spray strength. The OC percentage only measures the amount of red pepper concentrate contained in the pepper spray, not the actual pungency or effectiveness of the specific product.
What are capsaicin & capsaicinoids?
Oleoresin capsicum is composed of several different capsaicinoids. There are five major capsaicinoids responsible for providing the pungency or hotness of a pepper. Capsaicin is the strongest or most important of the five. Therefore, it is the percentage of the total capsaicinoids, not the OC percentage that is most important to take into account when purchasing your pepper spray.
Are law enforcement pepper sprays significantly more potent than civilian products?
There are significant differences in potency from one pepper spray to the next. However, civilians have access to pepper sprays with the same potency as carried by agencies using the strongest available formulations and potency levels.
For how long do most units fire?
The average 0.54 oz. keychain canister fires for approximately 5 quick bursts. A (15 gram) canister is the most popular size carried among civilians.
How long will most products last?
All aerosol products will eventually lose pressure over time. Most pepper sprays last up to four years from their manufacture date.
Can I reuse the canister after I've sprayed someone?
If you have deployed your canister in a live self-defense situation, we would recommend replacing the pepper spray with a new one which will be guaranteed to be filled completely. You always want your form of self defense to be as effective as possible in the time of need, especially if next time you are confronted by multiple threats at the same time (prepare for the worst, hope for the best).
What we recommend is using your previously deployed pepper spray for training purposes, this way you are still getting a valid use from the last remnants of your can.
How far do most products fire?
Depending upon the wind, most pepper sprays using a stream spray pattern fire 8 to 12 feet (3 to 4 meters). Pepper sprays using a cone/mist spray fire from 6 to 12 feet (2 to 4 meters). Cone delivery products deploy approximately 10 feet (3 meters) and gel sprays typically spray 20% further than stream.
What sort of testing has been done on your products?
Xtreme Pepper Spray (XPS) is committed to independent laboratory testing. These third party laboratories will conduct the following tests:
● Dermal irritation
● Eye irritation
● Total capsaicinoid pungency
● Flammability
● Inhalation
How long should I fire my pepper spray at my potential attacker?
We recommend to spray your can of pepper spray continuously until your attacker is fully incapacitated. Once you have stopped your attacker, find a safe escape route and contact the police immediately. Remember, once you have deployed your canister, we strongly recommend purchasing a new can of pepper spray and utilizing your old can for training purposes.
Are there any restrictions governing the use and sale of pepper sprays?
Though variations of pepper spray are legal in all 50 States, some areas have very specific regulations and specifications including purchasing, possession and the deployment of pepper sprays. Many states, including the following, have varying and sometimes strict restrictions: CA, FL, HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY & WI (please refer to our specific sales prohibited page). We suggest that you research the specific laws and restrictions pertaining to your area. If you have a question, you are always able to contact your local police department. However, pepper sprays are solely meant for defensive purposes and will only ever be sold to or used by persons 18 years of age or older.
Can I use my XPS pepper spray after the indicated expiration date to effectively defend myself?
Like any pressurized aerosol device, over time your can may not spray as far as it would compared to its maximum pressure potential, if it even sprays at all. We recommend replacing your can of pepper spray after the expiration date shown on each individual XPS can. The manufacturer cannot be held accountable if the spray has exceeded its stated expiration date, or if the expiration date is no longer visible due to wear and tear.
At what temperature should I store my XPS pepper spray?
Do not leave your can of XPS pepper spray in any area that has the potential to exceed 120° F (48.88° C) or drop below 32° F (0° C). Excessive exposure to both heat and/or cold may cause your can to leak and sometimes even burst. It is also important to not store your XPS pepper spray in your car.
Can I bring my XPS pepper spray on an airplane?
The Code of Federal Regulations reads like the following: 49 CFR Part 175.10, Exceptions for passengers, crewmembers, and air operators, (9) One self-defense spray (see §171.8 of this subchapter), not exceeding 118 mL (4 fluid ounces) by volume, that incorporates a positive means to prevent accidental discharge may be carried in checked baggage only. See FAA regulations. All products under 4 fluid ounces are FAA compliant. However, certain airlines may have their own restrictions; check with your carrier before your flight.
What do I do when my XPS pepper spray expires or is empty?
Your XPS pepper spray does contain chemicals and should be disposed of in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations.
Can I use XPS pepper spray on animals such as dogs?
Only products approved for use on dogs by the United States EPA or Health Canada can be used on dogs.
